Plan a visit to Victoria Falls, Zambia

Right on the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe is the Zambezi River and Victoria Falls, which locals call it "MosioaTunya" which means "The smoke that thunders". It is one of the largest waterfalls in the world with a width of 1,708 meters. It stretches for about a mile, the entire width of the Zambezi River, and descends a distance twice the height of Niagara into a narrow gorge in a seemingly continuous sheet, forcing the fog high into the sky.

Since it is shared by both countries, you can view all its majesty from any country.

Best time to visit

The best time is between February and May, after the summer rains and when the waterfalls are at their peak. Temperatures between these months can range from 20 °C to 30 °C. Although the season can be humid and quite hot, this is when you will have the most spectacular views of the waterfall, but beware, you might get a little wet!

How to get there

Since it sits on the border of the two countries, you can access both directions through any of their national parks entrances. Cross Zimbabwe via the town of Victoria Falls or enter via Livingstone in Zambia.

You can visit both sides of the falls in one day and have a different experience of each. The Zambian side has more of an autumn feel, you will feel a bit spray and most likely get wet. Although the Zimbabwean side has some picturesque views, from a distance you can see other views of the falls.

If you are planning to do both banks of the falls make sure you have a zambia visa for both countries you can get it separately or you can get a KAZA visa that will allow you to transit between Zambia and Zimbabwe within 30 days and only an entry to Botswana.

Other things to do

There's a lot you can do here, but it will depend on which side of the falls you're on and what time of year you've been there.

Swimming in the Devil's Pool is perhaps one of the main attractions and can only be experienced on the Zambian side and during the dry season, which runs from mid-August to mid-January. You'll sail through Zambezi to Livingstone Island, when you get there you will have to swim in a natural pool next to the falls.

You can also enjoy something more relaxing like a sunset cruise on the Zambezi River where you will see classic hippos, a large number of birds, vervet monkeys, baboons dogs, aquatic animals, crocodiles and hopefully more.

There is also the option of white water rafting, dubbed the wildest white water rafting in the world, so you definitely don't want to miss out on this massive adrenaline rush experience. This is something to try during the dry season, especially between August and September; During high water season, this activity is closed.

And a must-see is the Victoria Falls Bridge, which bridges the two countries and provides transport and train access. Built while still alive, the bridge is 198 meters long and 128 meters above the lowest point of the river. Here you can also enjoy a wonderful, different and complete view of Victoria Falls.
